Maybe the problem is the 2 party system. Maybe you need Center-Right parties / Center-Left parties where conservative liberals (an oxymoron in itself) can pull both the left and the right together. It's not surprising that in some of the best countries in Europe, its the progressives (from both sides of the isle) that drive their nations forward. The center is virtually non-existent and this is actually a big danger.

Yes the two party system party system is part of the problem. So are winner take all elections, primary elections, midterm elections, and gerrymandering. They design the whole system to limit voting to a small minority of increasingly crazy affluent white people.

Both parties have been less than stellar, but I think that a middle party is indicated. I don't know about Libertarians, because they have been branded essentially as Republicans who want to make pot & prostitution legal & not much else.
