Now it's beginning to make sense why I don't see any new spy thrillers or adventure stories featuring high-speed chases across continents, dodging government agencies, and hiding from stray bullets. That era is far from over. I guess both Gen Z and Millenials prefer to do most of their reading on the phone or listen to audiobooks. Even for Generation X'ers like me, we spend our time mostly on screens; maybe the novel was a medium to tell us stories. The reading couch disappeared a long time ago. The displacement of work-life balance into this new norm meant we really couldn't afford the time to cuddle up on a couch we bought but rarely used over the weekend. This is a very relevant article to a whole bunch of us who still hope that publishing on Penguin will be the pinnacle of success for a budding writer.
