One could argue that the mention of the serpent in the creation story doesn't refer to the devil, but the reference many times in the bible - “And I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your descendants and her Descendant. He will crush your head, and you will bruise His heel.” Gen 3:15. Much later on in the bible - "The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him" - Revelations 12:9.
