This is a great article indeed. Actually, only a week ago I ran into someone who is now teaching data science to a bunch of students (and I could have sworn he learnt it only last year)!!
The Trainers/Teachers should shoulder some of the responsibility here. I have often spoken to actual data scientists about how Udemy or even EdX could run courses for a fraction of a time it takes an actual graduate to learn it — and the answer I get is : well — the Math is not really that important !! The idea is to monetize the moment regardless of whether the entire science takes a beating in the long run!! Forget Log Loss function, half the crowd has even fled gradient descent after seeing multivariate calculus being used there.
Sadly this would continue, you would see more people trying to become Citizen Data Scientists with their notebooks and notebooks.
