This is one place where the United Nations needs to mandatorily step in. When erstwhile Yugoslavia fractured into pieces in the 1990s, NATO peacekeeping forces intervened. Although they still could not prevent the major massacres, their presence eventually resulted in the closure of the problem. One could argue that, in many ways, the situation is quite similar here when compared to the former Yugoslavia, the only difference being that since one of the parties here is an ally of the US, there is some hesitation. How long will the US hold off from engaging the UN to try to resolve this conflict? Will it burn its goodwill with all its other allies just for this? Regardless of preferences, all parties should allow the UN to intervene in this conflict. We must not dismiss the numerous casualties of war here as mere collateral damage before actual damage is done. If the surveys show that only 35% of Israelites cannot live with a two-state solution, I am guessing the percentage of Palestinians, if asked the same, would be much lower!! Clearly, the time for niceties is over. Implementing the two-state solution is feasible, as long as the appropriate number of guardrails are established. The time to act is now!!
